The Importance of Dreaming Together…

I once asked D, why would he choose me for life… he said for a simple reason, that in life, there is barely enough time to know a person… and “You my dear, are a mysterious combination of Madness and Peace…!”

The journey from kaleidoscopic FTII hostel experience, with a feminist two doors down and an impromptu chi-chi gang on the floor above… to working professionally together on projects, storyboarding and being sarcastic… we finally wised up to the idea by George Bernard Shaw , that…

“When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal and exhausting condition continuously until death do them part…”

We didn’t get years, months, not even a week to plan the wedding… but our perspective was to have a meaningful wedding rather than what convention said we should do… yes, we defied conventions…!

We wanted a wedding, minus the insanity…in the woods, by the sea, on the mountain-top, in the lap of nature… but the good old Muhurat (an auspicious date), cut us short on time… so we decided to keep it simple by performing a vedic wedding at an ancient Shiva temple by the Sabarmati river on a windy Sunday morning of 26 June 2011.

For friends from FTII, It was June 26 – Commemorating – Room No. 26, T.V Hostel, FTII

Though our parents offered to pitch in, we weren’t about to spend extravagantly in a single day, no matter whose money it was… so on a shoestring budget, it was a do-it-yourself wedding… we decided we’d rather stay out of debt, minimize stress levels and spend some of the money to build our home together… finding simplicity in the consumerist chaos of the marital market can be tough…

The day it all got finalized… it poured – rains, tears and some hot coffee… we stood drenched and relaxed… and D asked me, “Who is the first person, you want to break this news to…?… I excitedly replied, “Sanchit…!” (My most treasured friend whom I lost in a bike accident earlier this year)…

Jazz – my most patient friend and my ‘Brides-dude’… his immediate reaction was slightly irritated “Why am I not surprised, you HAD to do things differently?” However, he warmed up to it in no time… we were on the terrace facing the sky on a cloudy night and Jazz said, “Sanchit got the news, and he is here… Look..!” The departed might become stars for others, for me he had come as the Moon…

Two of our friends (Dubey and BK) were tipped off and their being with us was like having blessings from all our FTII friends… Super-power by our side!

Being the CEO of your own wedding can be tiring… we went back and forth between being stressed-out to really excited during this week… However, when I caught D sneaking a peek at me, during my walk down the aisle, I wanted nothing to ruin the pure bliss of it… For us this day was Meaningful, Understated and Elegant…

What we missed, were our close family relatives who would have CELEBRATED the marriage of their eldest grandchildren (both sides)… our friends from various walks of life, who wanted to ‘shake a leg’ at our wedding, in our honour, for our happiness… they would have sprung out into action to create a dance floor, to add all the Masti-Masala to our marriage…

We won’t elaborate much but let you enjoy the pictorial journey, but you do get to know three things,

1. While we both were being pushed to see/meet/smile at prospective partners… We talked, argued, cried and came to the conclusion that we were tired of ‘not being married’… We wanted to take each other off-the-marketfor good… write our script…!

There was no ring accompanying the proposal (only this image designed by D)… the ring-maker *ahem* had not enough time to craft and complete the order… Sooooo, D sang ‘thodi si zameen, thoda aasmaan’ song for me instead…And,…I said YES…!

2. We chose an auto rickshaw for our doli, because most of our journeys in five major cities – Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have been thanks to bumpy, insightful, rickety-rickshaw-rides… And our doli driver Mr. Farhan, bemused for being hired for a doli decoration, blessed us with many more humorous rides to make our journeys entertaining…!

3. D is looking forward to stocking-up groceries in the fridge and cooking simple meals at home… while I am getting used to waking-up to a thrice-snoozed mobile alarm and the smell of Jovan Musk…

Praying that there will be less of guilt-tripping us… and hoping that you would say a prayer for the Beginnings of our Family and help us create a mutually strengthening bond and a comfortable space for ourselves in your world…

According to D, there’s an amazing sense of power and relief that comes with knowing that the protagonist will have a leading lady…

We can hear powerful voices coming from inside and outside saying,

 “Shaadi Mubarak – Neha Deepak!”
